Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Counsellor and a Psychotherapist?
Training for Psychotherapists tends to be much longer and more comprehensive. A psychotherapist is also expected to have their own weekly therapy for an extensive period of time (often for the duration of their training).
How do I choose a therapist?
All the evidence shows that the key to successful therapy is finding, and working with, the right therapist for you. The theoretical approach they use is a relatively small factor. With this in mind I offer a FREE 30 minute initial appointment so that we can make a more informed choice about how to move forward.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
I understand from my personal and professional experiences how difficult it can be to take this first step. I therefore aim to create a welcoming, relaxed, safe space where you can talk openly about your issues and let me know what you hope to achieve by attending sessions. I will also go through some contractual elements e.g. confidentiality.
Will my sessions be confidential?
Yes, sessions are confidential. The exception would be if you were to pose a danger to yourself or others. I would always aim to discuss any concerns I had with you and encourage you to deal with issues where possible. However, in extreme cases I would be required to notify relevant parties.
How many sessions will I need?
This will depend on your particular needs. We will agree an initial number of sessions and review periodically. Psychotherapy is a commitment to yourself and requires regular attendance for the maximum benefit.
Do I need a referral?
No. Simply book in for an initial session.
Can I claim a rebate through Insurance?
Unfortunately I cannot offer a rebate through medicare. However, I understand that some private insurance companies do offer rebates for counselling/psychotherapy so please check with your current provider.
What are your rates?
I currently charge $95 (inc GST) per 50 minute session.
What is your cancellation policy?
A minimum of 24 hours notice.
What is your availability?
I generally work Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday morning. Other times may be available upon request.
What type of payment do you accept?
I accept cash and payment can be made by Bank Transfer.
